Star of the day this week was   Maia   Well done! Patchway is the first judo club in South Gloucestershire and Bristol County Judo to achieve the British Judo Silver Club Mark award, & the 2nd in the whole of the Western area! Merry Christmas from all at Patchway - first session of the New Year Saturday 7th January 2012.

Patchway Judo Club

Patchway Players, from Novice to 3rd Dan.

Yokoso (Welcome!)

Prof Jigoro Kano

Patchway Judo club prides itself on being a family club.

The club provides the opportunity for young people and adults to make new friends and keep active in a fun and safe environment. Best of all, family & friends of judo players are welcome to take part in all of the club activities & events.

The club was only the second in the whole of the South West to achieve Silver Clubmark award.

One of the secrets of our sucess is that the coaches have come through the club as players over the years. Our club aim is to help young people & adults to learn judo, build self confidence, self esteem & improve co-ordination and ultimately be the "best they can be".

Patchway Judo club is committed to helping children reach their full potential, whether they are competitive or recreational players, whatever their ability; ultimately, to become happy confident young people!

Professor Jigoro Kano, the founder of Judo said, "Judo is a teaching for life itself and with it we learn to overcome the pitfalls and obstacles of everyday living" and his words still ring true. A man of great vision, Kano summed up Judo by saying "it is the way to most efficiently use one's mental and physical strength. By training, one should discipline and cultivate the body and spirit through the practice of techniques of offence and defence, thereby to master the essence of Judo. And, by these means, it is the ultimate goal of Judo to build oneself up to perfection and thereby benefit the world."

22 May - Club Competition & U8 training

A fantasic day, so many of our players competing for the first time. The number of entries were so large we sadly weren't able to accept some entries, this is great news that inter club entries are on the up.

The Coaching team were extremely proud of all the players; a special mention to the U8 players who did the coaches proud with their Japanese knowledge as well as their judo! Another reason the Kano grading system is so good.

Our over 8's did very well, new experience for some, a lot to gain from competing. For others it was lovely to see how their confidence has grown and how steadily working through their grades has made them the confident players they now are. Whilst it was the first for some, it was the last for Finley and Ryan, yesterday proving they are ready to move on and leave the inter clubs.

No competition is viable with out the support of all the officials, referees and volunteers. Again how great is it to see how many young officials and referees are coming through. Thank to all the Bristol officials and referees and to our own club officials, Reece, Amy who passed her level 1 yesterday, Lisa, Rich, Mollie, Lorna & Chris. Thank you our Associate members, Natasha and Rebecca Maslen for being Head referee and Tournament Director, respectively.

As for our club volunteers, don't think we've ever had so much support; particularly the amount of club members volunteering, who either were too high a grade to compete or their children weren't competing! Thank you to everyone who helped and donated raffle prizes and cakes.

Last but not least Thank you to The Learning Grove for sponsoring the medals; this sponsorship helped us raise a record amount yesterday.

Photos are still available to purchase click here

14th May - Club AGM

Thank you to everyone attended. Lovely to see parents of some of our newer members.

Goodbye and Welcome to new postholders. Ian England has sadly needed to step down as Welfare officer, due to work commitments. Ian has been a very supportive and active Welfare officer, thanks to him for the time he put in over his time in office. Gloria Gibbins has kindly agreed to be a Welfare officer, this is good news as it means we still have two as Richard Oram continues in his post. Mollie Finn steps down as Kano Secretary and Michelle Burnard will take on this role. Deb Wiltshire stepped down as Assistant Volunteer co-ordinator to take on role as Assistant Treasurer. Jules Griffin will now be "Assistant Sweetie" supporting Sadie.

All other posts are the same, the only change is that the Coaching team will now be dealing with all competitions and just a reminder Emma, as Junior co-ordinator deals with gradings.

Thank you to all postholders who are continuing, all have done a great job helping the club to grow over the last year. Here's to another growth year for Patchway. Last but not least thanks to the Coaching team!

Patchway players made up a Bristol County squad of 11. Smartly dressed in Bristol County t-shirts.

Reece in C band U60 group fought really well was very unlucky not to one either of his fights with how well he was fighting, 31 in his weight group.

Sam & Kieran were both C band U66 group. Hard mentally for both of them, for the first time, after being given a good talking too, Kieran actually fought Sam properly in a competition. Good fight, with Sam winning by a wazari. Amy and Rachel were both in the Over 48kg group. In a break from tradtion the girls were called early. Amy went up first, unfortuantley loosing to the silver medallist in her first fight. Went on to win the Bronze. Rachel won all her fights, then had to wait 2 hours for the final. All the meddallists paraded around the mats.  Then the finals took place, yes Rachel's was last. Her opponent was much heavier, it was a tough fight, Rachel won by Ippon, to become 2010 U12 British Champion.

Well done girls!

5 September - UK school games

Meanwhile, in the North East Natasha was competiting for England at the UK school games.

With an 8 second first Ippon win she showed everyone she meant business! Natasha won a bronze medal, we are all very proud of her achievement.

5 September - Heart of England NIA - Vital points for Luke 2nd Dan Tavener!

A squad of 5 from b band to Senior travelled to the NIA for this prestigious event.

Ben, Reece and Alex unfortunately didn't win any fights, all did well, for all of them it was first time in their age groups, with them all moiving in to B C and D bands respectivley.

Luke had two good wins securing his vital points he has needed for so long to give him his 2nd Dan - Congratulations Luke.

Sam and Kieran were both in U66 C band, both winning losing out in the bronze medal fights and both achieving 5th, giving them both ranking points!

We were caretaking other players due to the absence of their coaches, Reins from Tora was with out Judy as she was a UK school Games with Natasha, Reins fought extremely well winning a bronze U 46 C band.

Tom, Myles fought well unfortunately didn't win. Dominic withdraw after his second fight due to a strangle, he's OK.

Subs

Firstly thank you to all of you who are paying your subs at the beginning of the session, just a polite reminder to those of you who haven't managed it! Subs need to be paid at the start of the session, so we have a list of children on the mat, in case we have to evacuate thebuilding!

If you prefer you can pay subs in advance in a block, (see Lisa Oram) if you do, please make sure you let Lisa know your children are at judo, or we could be looking for someone who isn't there!

Licences

The BJA has made a ruling that all players must have a licence after they have been doing judo for 4 weeks. The over 8 licence is £26 for a new licence and £21 for a renewal. The first licence comes with the red belt and a judo diary. Players can then grade following the mon grade syllabus 1st mon to 18th mon which goes to age 16. There is a Temporary 3 month licence, which is £4, doesn't come with a record book or belt, and can be renewed up to 3 times, a player can not grade or enter competitions.

For under 8's it is £17 for the Kano licence, this is aimed at the younger players and comes with a poster, attendance card as well as badges and stickers which are awarded by the coaches. The stickers go on the poster and the attendance badges are sewn on the suit. The players then grade from Kano one to nine. Alison has got licence forms for both schemes, which need to be sent direct to the BJA; if your child is over 7 ½ then we recommend you go straight for the mon licence, for players under 7 ½ years we recommend the Kano licence.

If you have any questions regarding licences then do not hesitate to speak to Alison or Emma. If your child has recently got a licence, can you please either email Alison their licence number, on the pink sheet (one letter then 5 numbers) or give it directly to Emma at Judo.

Club Rules

You will see with the new membership forms that players need to sign to say they have either read the rules, or have had them read to them. Rules and discipline are very important to both the ethos of judo and for the safety of all the players on the mat. Please ensure your children are aware of the rules so that the coaches can coach in a safe, fun environment.

Toys

In the past here have been a lot of "falling outs" over children's toys. Please don't bring "precious" toys to judo as we don't want anyone upset over toys they are not happy to share. We appreciate that children need to bring toys, particularly if their sibling is on a session. Could you please encourage your children to share, but also ask the children to understand that sometimes someone may not feel like sharing their toy and that needs to be appreciated. Thank you!

Patchway help...

Everyone mucks in to put the mats away at the end of sessions, which is great. We need help for the following:

  • Tuesday 5.45pm laying out mats
  • Saturday 9.00am laying out mats
  • Saturday 9.15am - 1pm teas/coffees & sweets (or 9.15am – 10.30am or 10.25am– 11.30pm 11.25-1pm)

           Cooking 9.45am-12.15pm

If you can't cook then it's OK there is a space for tea/coffee makers!!! - Please sign up to the list!

Thank you to all our regular cooks and tea/coffee makers!

A last plea from the kitchen:

Can you please do your utmost to remember to order by 11.30am to help the cooks!
