Welcome to New Star Patchway
New Star Patchway Judo Club caters for children from 4½ years old
(note, Adult Judoka are more than welcome to come and train at our
sister club in Ashton). New Star Patchway
is committed to being both a recreational and competitive club.
There is no pressure for players to enter any competitions, players
can grade from Kano 1 all they way to top brown (18th Mon), with
out entering competitions, currently they will need to fight for
gradings beyond top yellow (6th mon).
The club is run by a parent's forum, so if you are a parent of a child at the club,
then... Congratulations! You are automatically member of the forum!
How active you are is up to you, but remember ~ all activity burns
calories!!
The club owes a great deal of gratitude to the active members of
the Parents Forum and without their commitment and support this
club would grind to a halt. You will see their names appear listed
on newsletters and see them helping out on Tues/Sat sessions along
with organising club outings/events. More parents need to get involved
in this Forum to help out the others as it is your club not somewhere
just to bring the kids.
Come on, get involved and embrace yourself with a great feeling
of achievement and well being - as Uncle Sam nearly said "Your
Club needs you!"
Patchway News
Club Mark
We achieved our Bronze Club Mark Award in July 2007 - see the Club Mark page!
Patchway AGM, Saturday 28th April.
Thank you to all of you who attended. AGM minutes will be circulated
separately.
Main points, Club Mark file for Bronze award club accreditation
is almost complete, apart from a course that two people need to
attend, which will hopefully be in June. The file can then be submitted
to the BJA for accreditation. If successful, we will be the first
club in the area to gain Bronze award.
The club is run by Parents forum, which means as soon as you sign
the permission/membership form you are all involved! Under BJA constitution
and Club Mark we do need to have named people with areas of responsibility,
so the Rogues gallery are as follows:
- Chair & Head Coach, John Bath.
- Secretary, Junior co-ordinator & Mini's Coach, Alison Finn
- Junior Coach, Luke Tavener.
- Treasurer, Lisa Oram.
- Welfare Officer, Anne Duke.
- Vice Chair, Pauline Gibbs.
- Kitchen Coordinator, Julie Moore.
- Competition Secretary, Lisa Oram.
- Kano Secretary Julie Windows.
- PR is joint role shared, between Giles Norton & Pauline
Gibbs.
Although these are named roles, we still need everyone to be part
of the running of club to help the club continue to grow. Both clubs
are for the whole family and we want everyone to feel they are a
part of the clubs. If you are not happy with anything, or have any
concerns, either talk to the coaches or the Welfare Officer, Anne
Duke.

Subs
Firstly thank you to all of you who are paying your subs at the beginning
of the session, just a polite reminder to those of you who haven’t managed it!
Subs need to be paid at the start of the session, so we have a list of children
on the mat, in case we have to evacuate the building!
If you prefer you can pay subs in advance in a block, (see Lisa Oram) if you
do, please make sure you let Lisa know your children are at judo, or we could be
looking for someone who isn’t there!
Patchway help...
Everyone mucks in to put the
mats away at the end of sessions, which is great. We need
help for the following:
- Tuesday 6.00pm laying out mats
- Saturday 9.15am laying out mats
- Saturday 9.40am - 12.15pm cooking or teas/coffees (or
9.40am – 10.45am or 10.35am– 12.15pm)
If you can’t cook then it’s OK there is a space for tea/coffee makers!!! - Please sign up to the list!
Thank you to all our regular cooks and tea/coffee makers!
A last plea from the kitchen:
Can you please do your utmost to remember to order by 11.30am to help the cooks!
Thanks,
Alison |
Licenses
The BJA has made a ruling that all players must have a licence
after they have been doing judo for 4 weeks. The over 8 licence
is £19 for a new licence and £18 for a renewal. The first
licence comes with the red belt, players can then grade following
the mon grade syllabus 1st mon to 18th mon which goes to age
16. There is a Temporary 3 month licence, which is £4, doesn’t
come with a record book or belt, and can be renewed up to
3 times, a player can not grade or enter competitions.
For under 8’s it is £15 for the Kano licence, this is aimed
at the younger players and comes with a poster, attendance
card as well as badges and stickers which are awarded by the
coaches. The stickers go on the poster and the attendance
badges are sewn on the suit. The players then grade from Kano
one to nine. Alison has got licences forms for both schemes,
which need to be sent direct to the BJA; if your child is
over 7 ½ then we recommend you go straight for the mon licence,
for players under 7 ½ years we recommend the Kano licence.
If you have any questions regarding licences then do not
hesitate to speak to Alison or John. If your child has recently
got a licence, can you please either email Alison their licence
number, on the pink sheet (one letter then 5 numbers) or give
it directly to Alison at Judo.
Club Rules
You will see with the new membership forms that players need
to sign to say they have either read the rules, or have had
them read to them. Rules and discipline are very important
to both the ethos of judo and for the safety of all the players
on the mat. Please ensure your children are aware of the rules
so that the coaches can coach in a safe, fun environment.
Blue Kits
Some clubs don’t allow them at all, at others they are only
worn by coaches. Until a player is entering National standard
competitions they can only fight in white kits. Even at National
level if they have a blue kit, they must also have a white
one. In our club, blue suits may be worn by players, when
they have won a medal in an over 8 competition. This ruling
was brought in several years ago, as an incentive for players
to enter competitions, and to identify those players working
towards the squad.
Squad t-shirts are awarded to players when they have shown commitment
to entering competitions, outside of inter clubs, and a commitment
to training.
Toys
In the past here have been a lot of "falling outs" over children's
toys. Please don't bring "precious" toys to judo as we don't
want anyone upset over toys they are not happy to share. We
appreciate that children need to bring toys, particularly
if their sibling is on a session. Could you please encourage
your children to share, but also ask the children to understand
that sometimes someone may not feel like sharing their toy
and that needs to be appreciated. Thank you!
