Subs
Firstly thank you to all of you who
are paying your subs at the beginning of the session, just a polite
reminder to those of you who haven't managed it! Subs
need to be paid at the start of the session, so
we have a list of children on the mat, in case we have to evacuate
thebuilding!
If you prefer you can
pay subs in advance in a block, (see Lisa Oram) if you do, please
make sure you let Lisa know your children are at judo, or we could
be looking for someone who isn't there!
Licences
The BJA has made
a ruling that all players must have a licence after they have
been doing judo for 4 weeks. The over 8 licence is £26 for
a new licence and £22 for a renewal. The first licence comes
with the red belt and a judo diary. Players can then grade
following the mon grade syllabus 1st mon to 18th mon which
goes to age 16. There is a Temporary 3 month licence, which
is £4, doesn't come with a record book or belt, and can be
renewed up to 3 times, a player can not grade or enter competitions.
For under 8's it
is £17 for the Kano licence, this is aimed at the younger
players and comes with a poster, attendance card as well as
badges and stickers which are awarded by the coaches. The
stickers go on the poster and the attendance badges are sewn
on the suit. The players then grade from Kano one to nine.
Alison has got licence forms for both schemes, which need
to be sent direct to the BJA; if your child is over 7 ½ then
we recommend you go straight for the mon licence, for players
under 7 ½ years we recommend the Kano licence.
If you have any
questions regarding licences then do not hesitate to speak
to Alison. If your child has recently got a licence, can you
please either email Alison their licence number, on the pink
sheet (one letter then 5 numbers) or give it directly to Alison
at Judo.
Club Rules
You will see with the new membership forms that players need
to sign to say they have either read the rules, or have had
them read to them. Rules and discipline are very important
to both the ethos of judo and for the safety of all the players
on the mat. Please ensure your children are aware of the rules
so that the coaches can coach in a safe, fun environment.
Toys
In the past here have been a lot of "falling outs" over children's
toys. Please don't bring "precious" toys to judo as we don't
want anyone upset over toys they are not happy to share. We
appreciate that children need to bring toys, particularly
if their sibling is on a session. Could you please encourage
your children to share, but also ask the children to understand
that sometimes someone may not feel like sharing their toy
and that needs to be appreciated. Thank you!
Patchway
help...
Everyone mucks in to put the
mats away at the end of sessions, which is great. We need
help for the following:
- Tuesday 5.45pm laying out mats
- Saturday 9.15am laying out mats
- Saturday 9.40am - 12.15pm cooking or teas/coffees (or
9.40am – 10.45am or 10.35am– 12.15pm)
If you can't cook then it's OK there is a space for tea/coffee makers!!! - Please sign up to the list!
Thank you to all our regular cooks and tea/coffee makers!
A last plea from the kitchen:
Can
you please do your utmost to remember to order by 11.30am to help
the cooks!
Patchway FAQs
When can my child start learning judo?
Under BJA rules we can
start taking children 4 weeks before their fifth birthday (also
known as "rising 5s")..
Will my child have to fight in competitions?
Patchway is committed
to being both a recreational and competitive club. There is no pressure
for players to enter any competitions, players can grade from Kano
1 all they way to top brown (18th Mon) without entering competitions
should they so wish.
However, if your child
does wish to play competitive judo, then the club will help them
become the best they can be, giving them a firm founding in modern
competitive judo and provide the technical knowledge and competitive
insight required for success at club level and beyond. With close
links with other clubs in Bristol, and also with Bristol County
Judo, you can rest assured there is opportunity to train with some
of the best players in the South West.
How do I know the club is of a high standard?
We achieved our Sport
England Bronze Club Mark Award in July 2007 - (see the Club
Mark page!) and we achieved Silver in 2010, only the 2nd club
in the South West to do so. For more details about Club Mark www.clubmark.org.uk
How much does it cost?
Please come along and
taste your first session for free! After that each session costs
£3. There is an annual membership fee of £15 per year
which you should wait 3-4 weeks before paying to ensure that you
wish to continue. You don't have to pay a membership fee however
but this means your weekly subs will remain at £3. If you
opt to pay your annual membership you will be able to pay reduced
mat fees of £2.20 per session and you will also gain half
price entry to our own competitions.
Family membership rates:
- 2 members of one family £25 per year
- 3 or more family members £30 per year
If you would like to
spread the cost of the membership, please speak to Lisa or Alison.
Please also see the 'Licenses' section opposite.
How is the club organised?
The club is run by a parent's forum, so if you are a parent of a child at the club,
then... Congratulations! You are automatically member of the forum!
How active you are is up to you, but remember ~ all activity burns
calories!!
The club owes a great
deal of gratitude to the active members of the Parents Forum and
without their commitment and support this club would grind to a
halt. You will see their names appear listed on newsletters and
see them helping out on Tues/Sat sessions along with organising
club outings/events. More parents need to get involved in this Forum
to help out the others as it is your club not somewhere just to
bring the kids, it's for the whole family!.
BJA rules dictate that we must have a chairperson, secretary and
treasurer. These and the other formal roles listed below in the
who's who section are elected at our AGM which is held in May, but
you don't need to have a formal position to get involved!! Come
on, embrace yourself with a great feeling of achievement and well
being - as Uncle Sam nearly said "Your Club needs you!"
Can my child wear a blue kit?
Some clubs don't allow them at all, at others they are only worn
by coaches. Until a player is entering National standard competitions
they can only fight in white kits. Even at National level if they
have a blue kit, they must also have a white one. In our club, blue
suits may be worn by players once they have won a medal in an over
8 competition, or a BJC competition (which are open to under 8s).
This ruling was brought in several years ago, as an incentive for
players to enter competitions, and to identify those players working
towards the squad.
Squad t-shirts are awarded to players when they have shown commitment
to entering competitions, outside of inter clubs, and a commitment
to training.
What about social events?
Throughout the year we
try to intersperse Social Events that are generally well received
and allow the children, their siblings and their Parents/Guardians
to get together and forge lasting friendships. Take a look at the
Home page for our upcoming events and news.
